The American Movie Review

The American Movie Review – George Clooney stars in “The American,” a movie about a mysterious individual who fends off killers in a sort of “Bond-like” fashion. With brooding music in the backdrop, it is hard to take your eyes away from Clooney’s masterful acting. Although we never get to learn much about his character, we do find out that he is a loner and that is enough to pique our interest.

The film almost feels like a throwback to the 70’s paranoia psychological thrillers, and the tension builds throughout the movie. “The American” starts with our main characters on a Swedish vacation and being interrupted by individuals with guns who are apparently after Clooney, setting the stage for the paranoid danger that is present throughout the film.
Mr. B, Clooney’s character, quickly flees to Italy, where he begins work on his next assignment. The film is accompanied by a love story that drives it, but the real focus is on the action. The movie was based on a book by Martin Booth and directed by Anton Corbijn, who is a Dutch native.

The plot, while simplistic, is able to drive the story forward throughout. It may not be one of the best movies of the year, but it is an interesting watch for individuals that enjoy suspenseful thrillers. Clooney, as always, is awesome in the lead role and plays his character to a tee.

“The American” doesn’t answer many questions, but then again it doesn’t ask many either. They use a minimalist style of storytelling that accentuates Clooney’s acting ability. It will be interesting to see how this movie performs at the box office over the course of the weekend.

Overall George Clooney’s “The American” looks more European than American. Nonetheless it is good entertainment.

My interest was not “piqued” throughout this painfully slow movie as your review suggests. The suspense was minimal and I feel ripped off in that the only suspense is what was in the trailers. The movie is the exact opposite of what was portrayed. This movie is not even worth renting when it mercifully leaves the big screen. I think fans will feel like they were duped and word will spread like a wildfire.

  2. John H says:

The american is THE WORST movie of the year. There was an accumulative
Uhg! when the movie was over. The talk on the way out of the theatre was “what an aweful movie” was overheard as we departed the theatre reinforcing our impression of this pathetic Clooney movie. Nothing makes sense no is Clooney convincing in his very strange role. Word of mouth will kill this on arrival!

  3. Bev says:

What a waste of money and time. Not even the good looking Clooney could make this film come to life. Boring, boring, boring. Not at all a thriller. People after the movie were commenting to each other how bad this movie was.

  4. Susanne says:

We have the same comments.. absolutely AWFUL.. no suspense NO action scenes except when a cheap vespa hit a car.. people walked out of the movie and we were hoping it would get better it didnt .. we were glad he died in the end so there wont be a sequel.
The crowd actually hissed and booed at the end… dont bother going its too painful..

  5. Jim says:

This falls into the category what in the hell were they thinking! With all the professionals needed in making a movie it seems like somewhere along the line someone would have said “hey guys this thing stinks like a big pile of you know what”. I fell asleep twice in this thing, aside from a couple of nice nude scenes there was absolutely nothing interesting about it. George stick with acting and leave the producing and coming up with ideas to someone else because you fail in that department. Horrible lousy movie, the pain would have been less if we had just taken the $20 we spent and burned it, at least it would have been over quicker. I started to walk out a time or two but kept thinking there has to be something big yet to come, there wasn’t.

I have now lost all rights to pick movies for my family. This awful movie has cost me time i will never get back DONT GO SEE IT!

  7. LIz says:

The only suspense was — when would it end? The story was predictable, the dialogue trite, and I didn’t care what happened to the characters. The story jumped the shark too many times. Like, why was an assassin who was instructed not to make any friends, immediately befriending a small town priest? Why was his cover as a photographer, yet he never took pictures?

The audience complained loudly throughout about how awful and boring it was. They applauded at the end and shouted, “Yeah! It’s over!”

Clooney did a great job acting and cinematography was spectacular.

  8. Robert says:

Very boring movie. All hype, no substance. I should have asked for my money back. The theatre had about 20 viewers in it. A lot of smart people didn’t attend. I wondered why the setting was in Italy, or anywhere for that matter. They could have used my back garden for free. Imagine a setting in a large town, and not seeing anyone walking the streets.

  9. Dev says:

7 Characters, 8 Bullets, Italian Cobble Roads, Sound of shoes and 70s backdrop music. One line definition of the movie.

Some stupid reviews on google and I got trapped to see this movie.

No background, no story line. I was waiting till end something my turn up to save my 10$. My friend is going to cook the dinner alone for a week because of suggesting the movie and wasting 40$

  10. big sis says:

You are retarded! These two guys are awesome together! I’ll be buying it for the whole family!!

  11. big sis says:

omg…sorry just realized my comment was on the wrong movie! this movie did make me want want my money back

  12. byruby says:

    It was painful.Truly gratuitous…masturbatory
Hollywood at its worst…donate your money to one of George’s causes instead…

  13. clara says:

  14. Angela says:

There were three of us watching the movie, my daughter fell asleep within 30 min. and my husband lasted one hour, but I decided to forge foward on my own because it had to get better, right? Wrong, it actually got worse.
